Period pain isn’t just “part of being a woman.” While it might be common, that doesn’t mean it’s normal—or something you have to just put up with. If you're here, chances are you've dealt with the kind of cramps that stop you in your tracks, make you want to curl up in bed, and leave you wondering if it’s always going to be like this. I see you. I’ve been there too.

The good news is, nature has gifted us some beautiful herbs that can support your body, ease period pain, and help bring your cycle back into balance. Let’s take a look at some of my favourites and how they can support you through your monthly flow.

🌸 First, What Causes Period Pain?

Period pain, or dysmenorrhea, can be caused by a few different things—hormonal imbalances, high prostaglandin levels (these cause the uterus to contract), endometriosis, inflammation, and tension in the pelvic area.

Herbal remedies can help by:

  • Reducing inflammation

  • Relaxing the muscles of the uterus

  • Supporting hormone balance

  • Calming the nervous system

Now onto the herbs…

🌿 Herbs That Help with Period Pain

1. Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus)

It’s all in the name—this herb is famous for easing cramps. Cramp bark is a uterine relaxant, meaning it helps calm those intense contractions that make your period feel unbearable. It’s especially good if your pain radiates into your back or thighs.

How to use: Best as a tincture or tea leading up to and during your period.

2. Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

A kitchen staple and a natural anti-inflammatory, ginger helps reduce prostaglandins (those pain-causing chemicals) in the body. It’s great if your cramps come with nausea or bloating too.

How to use: Fresh ginger tea or add to smoothies. You can also find it in capsule form.

3. Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

This gentle flower isn’t just calming for the mind—it’s also anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic (great for cramps), and supports restful sleep during your cycle.

How to use: Sip on chamomile tea in the days leading up to your period or whenever you need extra support.

4. Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis)

Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries, Dong Quai is known as the “female ginseng.” It supports blood flow, helps reduce cramping, and supports overall hormonal balance.

How to use: Usually taken in capsules or tincture form. Best used under the guidance of a herbalist if you have a condition like endometriosis or heavy bleeding.

5. Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus)

Often called “the woman’s herb,” raspberry leaf tones the uterus and can help regulate and ease menstruation. It’s not a painkiller, but when used regularly, it can reduce overall discomfort over time.

How to use: Brew into a tea—perfect with a bit of honey and lemon.

6. Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Another anti-inflammatory superstar, turmeric can be a gentle way to reduce pain and inflammation throughout your cycle. Pair it with black pepper for better absorption.

How to use: Add to smoothies, golden milk, or take in capsule form.

7. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Yarrow is great for stagnation—so if your period feels like everything is stuck or clotted and painful, this herb might help get things flowing more smoothly. It’s also antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory.

How to use: Often used as a tea or tincture.

🌙 How to Use Herbs for Period Pain

You can use herbs as teas, tinctures, capsules, or powders—depending on what suits your lifestyle best. I often recommend starting with teas for their gentle approach and calming ritual. Tinctures are great for stronger, faster support.

📝 Important note: Always check with a qualified herbalist or naturopath before starting a new herbal remedy, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on medications. The herbs that work wonders for one person might not be the best fit for someone else.

💗 My Personal Herbal Support Journey

When I first started using herbs for my painful periods, I was overwhelmed by all the options. But over time—and with a lot of trial and error—I found my rhythm. I worked with a naturopath to create a custom blend that matched my symptoms and supported my cycle. I also swapped my morning coffee for dandelion root tea (a game-changer for liver support), had my daily smoothie (aka my "fertility smoothie"), and really focused on building a holistic routine that supported my hormones naturally.

Painful periods used to control my life. Now, they're something I can manage, and I feel empowered knowing I have tools to support my body naturally.

🛒 Want Help Choosing the Right Herbs?

If you're just starting out and want to try herbs for your cycle, I always recommend working with a herbalist or naturopath to get a blend that's made just for you. Everyone’s body is different, and a personalised formula can make a huge difference.

I’ll be launching herbal blends soon as part of My Inner Seasons, so keep an eye out. You deserve support that actually works with your body—not against it.

🧘‍♀️ Final Thoughts

Period pain doesn’t have to be your normal. With the help of herbal support, mindful lifestyle changes, and a little self-compassion, you can begin to shift your cycle from painful to peaceful.

You’re not alone, and your pain is valid. I hope this post gave you a few ideas to explore—and a gentle reminder that your body deserves to be supported, not silenced.

Sending love,
